NEW WORK

Summer, 2007

Nearly all of my quilts begin with a photograph. This one was taken the first time Tom took our grandson Simon fishing. It was a beautiful summer day and they were surrounded by the woods, with light that filtered through the trees.

From the photo, I made a drawing and then created a consturtion diagram.—figuring out just how the sections could be sewn together. After that intial diagram was complete, the drawing was enlarged to actual size and the fun of placing fabrics began.

Since my intention was to make a quilt about how our minds construct memories, I surrouned the central image with a multitude of patterned fabrics representing pieces of that summer day. And into the quilting, I worked numerous images of animals that were in the woods that day.
